Software to support multi-disciplinary meetings (MDMs) can improve the referral process, allow for more accurate documentation of the meeting discussion and improve data collection and reporting. In 2010, Western Health received a grant from WCMICS to develop MDM software for 6 tumour streams (lung, colorectal, upper GI, haematology, breast, uro-oncology). An entirely novel software solution was collaboratively developed for Western Health by Ascribe. The system was implemented in 2012 and contained separate processes for referral to MDMs and for documenting MDM discussion. The successes of the new software have been many, including improved referral processes as well as recording of MDM discussions and tumour stage information. A Department of Health clinical audit demonstrated a > 20% improvement in documentation of MDM recommendations at Western Health from 2011 to 2012. The current system has great scope to expand and evolve.
